Why LAMDA?
It's official! Oracy now has the same status on the curriculum as the three Rs! In fact we now have four! Reading Writing, Arithmetic and Oracy.
Oracy is how we verbally and auditorily communicate with others. It requires nuance and the ability to listen, process, be thoughtful, have empathy and put yourself in someone else's shoes to make you an effective communicator. For years it is perhaps something we have taken for granted and not really recognised just how powerful the art of conversation is, sharing a story or personal anecdote with someone; listening and thinking about what is being exchanged in the words we speak, the tone of voice used, the pitch and pace, the pause.
LAMDA Performance and Communication Exams, Shakespeare for Performance and Group Exams are a brilliant way of improving oracy skills. With a carefully structured syllabus ranging from Introductory exams all the way up to Grade 8 and on now to a PcertLAM. It is possible to really build the foundation of skills needed for intelligent, functionary (!) crucial engagement and communication.
As we know in our ever increasing tech world valuable language development is just not happening and developing as it naturally should at young ages, sadly screens have all too familiarly become a convenience and go to for all of us. At what cost we ask ourselves - surely we have more time now? More knowledge at our fingertips? This is likely the case if we used technology intelligently, sadly we do not. There have been many pros to our tech world but regrettably and crucially, many valuable losses.
But it is not too late! We can all get on board (with or without LAMDA) and talk to our little people (and each other) more, share lots of stories, conversation and 'chit chat'. Listen to young people when they talk to us so they are seen and heard. LAMDA and the Creative Arts are vital in this progress and should be accessible to all.
